religion is always a means of control. remember that if you die in battle regardless of who you fight for you go to heaven in all the major world religions.
you can split hairs all day long. They will say things like I didn't promise salvation. heaven can be temporary but dying in battle is definitely a path to heaven in all major religions the way ordinary people know religion.
If we need a religion to stop us from throwing rocks and stones at people for no reason maybe we aren't much of good people anyway.
